Luis Mariano Frometa (July 26, 1933- ) is both a university art teacher, painter, sculptor, and visual artist whose one history parallels that of the emerging Cuban nation. He fought in the revolution under Castro, and had strong artistic connections with Russia, where many of his sculptures were commissioned for civic display. He has created many of the sculptures that can be found throughout his home city of Santiago, and during the 1990's he was commissioned to create a bust of Pope John Paul the Second in commemoration of the pontiff's historic visit to the country. The work is permanenty displayed in the Cobre, one of Cuba's most important churches. Frometa lives in Calle Heredia, which is represented in his painting of that name. His two sons live in Santiago and have followed in the footsteps of their father by becoming successful artists in their own right. His works can be found in Cuba and abroad, including the Memorial to Frank País in Punta Gorda, Cienfuegos Camilo portraits in Santiago de Cuba and Camaguey, and work in his country's embassies in Poland and Czechoslovakia. He has won multiple awards for his work.
