As part of the celebrations for the 50 anniversary of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the "Ciudad de Maestros" exhibition is exhibited, a score of pieces that reflect the most typical of the artists José Julian Aguilera, José Loreto Hourrutinier, Miguel Ángel Botalin, Luis Mariano Frómeta, Lincoln Camué and Pedro Arrate, who were precisely founders of this important organization.
It is necessary to recognize in this sample the titanic work of its organizers to synthesize in a collective exhibition the chore and devotion of these plastic artists. Here the principal iconographies by which these artists have been identified during more than half a century of life and prolific creative work, are summed up in acrylic and oils on linen of medium and big format.
In this way, José Julian Aguilera with his presentation of a slow and warm city, in which the fisherman's area that we all identify as "Los cangrejitos" is reflected specially. Botalin, in his series "Iré a Santiago," prefers the streets and steep hillocks of this metropolis in which generally we glimpse the mountains or the sea, provided landscapes of the what is typical in his works.
Hourrutinier exhibits an expressionist city, in whom houses, sea and mountains are intermingled in intensely pictorial and irregular whole. Frómeta for his part, in addition to perpetuating the image of the negro like part of our roots and identity, makes a show once again of his domain in the skill of the portrait, by means of which many of our heroes, like José Martí, have remained immortalized.
The woman is represented by Camué, united to exotic and leafy tropical trees from which enormous fruits and showy birds stand out, recreating thus a playful and sensual ambience with disquieting feminine silhouettes. The sample is honored also by the geometric figures and irregular lines that shape the abstract pictures of Pedro Arrate, who was sprouting in life like pioneer of this pictorial genre of avant-garde in the Santiago ambience.
Each of these artists has contributed exceedingly to the development of the plastic arts in the province Santiago de Cuba and has left a way to be continued for the new generations, those that also continue the work of the UNEAC. Important organization that celebrates during these days its half a century of existence.
