Luis Miguel Rodriguez - Cuban Painter

He was born in Havana, Cuba September 29th 1959. At the age of 13, his outstanding abilities to create sketches and drawings led to him to be selected by the prestigious academy of art “San Alejandro” of Havana Cuba. During this time, his love of the sea and the underwater world he discovered temporarily distanced him from the art that he displayed such a passion as well. His love for underwater diving opened a new prospective for his abilities as an artist. It was also this time that allowed him to comprehensively explore and gain a great influence of the marine environment which surrounded him during his diving ventures. These influences are still predominant in his paintings, as it continues to compliment and display his vision of the sea world on the canvas. Armed with his gifted ability and imagination, he tirelessly pursues his expressions of these visions using the palate and canvas. Primarily  a medium to communicate  his surrealist concept, he is further influenced by the addition of his interpretation of the universal plastic arts, expressionism and contemporary art as seen thru the lens of his    remarkable imagination.
The impressionist influence can clearly be defined in the chromatic synthesis displayed in his artwork, which serves to express an intensity of light, atmosphere and the reflections these conditions and effects have in his creation. To the naked eye he allows the complimentary vision of balance that is reflected by his use of dimensions and proportions to further compliment the shadows and shades of colors that enable the viewer to associate with his art. A good example is of his symbolism is found in his work titled “New York-New York (9/11/2001), in which he embodies the human unity of the pain and suffering we all felt as a nation of all  creed and colors. The union if all races and cultures, as seen lifting the Big Apple are irrevocably expressing the bond between us as a people. This resurrection from the ashes is our link to the N.Y.C. phoenix being reborn once more. This work is on exhibit as part of the permanent collection of the 911 commemorative paintings in the City hall of Manhattan, New York.

This process may result in a variation of color but most in the gamma of red's much like the result of a blood stain when spilled over fabric. This technique used by painters in the 13th and 14th century, dubbed the name of the "Century of Artillery" you may have heard of one painter in particular famed for his sanguine paintings he was Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci described by the painter in an interview as "El gran maestro" (the great teacher) and the surrealism work of both Dali and Picasso are among his inspirations.

Humberto Hernandez "El Negro" - Pinar Del Rio Painter

Hernandez, Humberto “El Negro” Born in Pinal Del Rio in 1958. To enjoy the rural landscapes of Humberto Hernández, better known as ‘El Negro,’ is an indescribable gift. To be witness to the passion, energy, and full-throttle vigor from which they emanate, is to become an admirer of his work. In his vision, influenced by his first gazes at art as a youngster, one will find virtuosity, originality, rebelliousness, and abandon. With authentic expressionism, Humberto immerses himself in the landscape to, in an irreverent way, make us participants in his seascapes, storms, his colourful paint, and the huts that give it life. His poetry is not based on showing us the surroundings per se, but on a new interpretation and assimilation of this magic and contemplative world of the Cuban countryside.

Roberto Estopinan - Sculptor, Draftsman, and Printmaker

Estopinan, Roberto is a sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, was born March 17, 1921 in Havana, Cuba. He enrolled at the Academia San Alejandro when he was 14 and became the protege and studio assistant of the sculptor Juan José Sicre. After graduation he traveled first to Mexico, where he met and befriended Francisco Zuniga, and studied Pre-Columbian sculpture. In 1949 he traveled to Europe, visiting England, France and Italy. In these trips he encountered the sculpture of Henry Moore and Marino Marini, and their humanistic yet formal visions would be influential on Estopinan's work.
Throughout the 1950s Estopinan received important sculpture prizes at various national exhibitions in Havana. In 1953 he was the only semi-finalist from Latin America at the Tate Gallery's international sculpture competition for a Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner. During the 1950s he worked in direct carving with native Cuban woods, as well as in direct plaster and welding - these works blend figural and abstract elements. The 1960s brought forth his series of political prisoners, warriors and crucifixions, mostly carved in wood or as welded nails. The 1970s work saw an abandonment of the rawness of the previous decade in favor of a pantheistic vision, where the sculptures reflected the textures and forms of nature.
Since the 1980s he has been involved with the female torso as his favorite expressive form. These bronzes tend to possess a minimal classicism, that emotionally range from sensual to pained. As a printmaker and draftsman, his production has been thematically parallel to his sculptures.
The most complete collection of his prints (1959-96) is in the Jersey City Museum in New Jersey, where an exhibition was hosted in the Spring of 1996.
Estopinan was active in the urban guerilla against Batista, and joined the diplomatic service after the triumph of the 1959 Revolution. By 1961, he became disillusioned with the dictatorial policies of the new regime and went into exile in the U.S.A. He lived in NYC from the 1960s until 2002, when he retired to Miami, Fla.
Together with Juan Jose Sicre, Alfredo Lozano and Agustin Cardenas, Estopinan is considered one of the pioneers of modern sculpture in Cuba and Latin America.

Ana Gladys Falcon

Ana Gladys Falcon is a painter, draftswoman and printmaker. She was born in Matanzas in 1964. Since childhood she was interested in drawing and at eleven years old enrolled in the Elementary School of Arts in Matanzas, then took the tests to enter the National Art School, ENA, she approved and graduated in 1983 in the specialty of painting. Her tenure in the ENA was during the eighties at a time in which teachers were, in turn, artists, whose closeness was very important in her formation. Among the teachers, at that time she remembers, were Nelson Dominguez, Ernesto García Peña, Eduardo Roca Salazar (Choco), Angel Ramirez and Yaqueline Magy. Ana Gladys feels that she had a great influence by Cuban painters and this is reflected through color, line she uses, Amelia Pelaez, Wifredo Lam and Alfredo Sosabravo are three artists who, she believes, have influenced a lot of her work.

The female subject is a theme that she has been developing with increasing fervor aspiring to represent women in their context and from their feelings that so dearly characterizes them. She likes to put women in a given environment, and each artwork is like a piece that has its own discourse while representing the everyday life. The woman may be at home or on the street but always in a beautiful way. Her work is figurative, but sometimes flirts with other trends. She work with oil and acrylic and this, in particular, gives her the possibility to use very bright colors. Falcon believes that the blue and orange acrylic are brightest and cleanest colors. Acrylic give her the advantage of drying faster, while the oils allow her to extract more hues, values
and provides her the ability to create multiple effects. The texture is something that interests her very much; her pictures are a little baroque in the respect that that they place textures and shapes in the background
Her works are can be found in private collections in the United States (Miami, California and New York), Spain, Portugal, Italy, Singapore, Chile, Ecuador and Costa Rica. She is a frequent guest of the International Biennial of Havana. Some of her works are features in the Flores Carbonell Collection.

SPANISH:

Pintora, dibujante y grabadora.
