Bernardo Carbonell Cespedes (Santiago de Cuba, 1976)

Bernardo Carbonell Cespedes is a talented Cuban artist born in Santiago de Cuba in November of 1976.

From an early age Bernardo was inspired by family tradition regarding the arts, participating in painting and drawing competitions beginning at elementary school, earning awards for municipal and provincial instances.

While in the Secondary School he penetrates more deeply into the world of visual arts, performing studies and research that empirically provided him with remarkable results in the exercise of his art. The consultation of books concerning great painters and important works with explanation of the techniques used, allowed him to develop some of these techniques, delving into the details of the work, colorful strokes, forms of expression, etc..
In 1999 he presented his first promotional exhibition in the galleries belonging to the Cultural Association "Antonio Bravo Correoso", continuing his work creation from his home studio.

In 2002 he began working as an editor in the Department of Atmosphere Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets, until July 2003 he resigned in order to pursue his artistic endeavors as a creator. His work in the background even allowed him an insight into the art world, having the ability to learn about the important work of fine artists Santiago, as well as interact with them directly, drawing on their expertise which have so dearly influenced his self-taught endeavors and helped shape his line of work and defining his artistic projections.

During this short period of work he participate in curatorial, design and construction processes of numerous exhibitions of plastic arts, such as:

Also participated in the assembly integral process of Expocaribe Fairs 2002 and 2003 and Fairs in 2002 and 2003 developed Iberoarte in Holguin where intertwine Fine Arts and Applied Arts.
In 2002 in the Expocaribe Fair he exhibited oil on canvas piece to integrate it into the atmosphere of the booth to promote their work.

TRAYECTORIA ARTISTICA

Desde muy temprana edad se inspiro en la tradición familiar respecto a las pinturas, participando en diferentes concursos de pintura y dibujo en la Escuela donde curso el nivel primario, obteniendo premios a instancia municipal y provincial.
Ya en la Secundaria Básica incursiona de manera más profunda en el mundo de las artes plásticas, realizando estudios e investigaciones, que aunque de forma empírica le brindo notables resultados en el ejercicio de su arte. La consulta de libros referente a grandes pintores e importantes obras con explicación de las técnicas empleadas, le permitieron desarrollar algunas de estas técnicas, profundizando en los detalles de la obra, trazos de colores, formas de expresión, etc.
En 1999 presento su primera Exposición de carácter promocional en la Galerías perteneciente al Ateneo Cultural “Antonio Bravo Correoso”, continuando su trabajo de creación desde el Estudio que posee en su casa.

En el año 2002 comenzó a trabajar como Montador en el Departamento de Ambientación del Fondo Cubano de Bienes Culturales, hasta Julio del 2003 en que pide su baja para realizar la tramitación de su Registro del Creador Artístico. Su trabajo en el Fondo le permitió adentraste aun más el mundo del arte, teniendo la posibilidad de conocer de cerca la obra de importantes artistas de la plástica santiaguera; así como relacionarse con ellos de manera directa, nutriéndose de conocimientos técnicos que han influido de forma muy positive en su formación autodidacta y contribuido a conformar su línea de trabajo y definir proyecciones artísticas.

Durante este corto periodo de trabajo participo en procesos de curaduría, diseño y montaje de numerosas exposiciones de las Artes Plásticas, tales como:

En la Feria Expocaribe del 2002 expuso una pieza en oleo/lienzo para integrarla a la ambientación del Stand a fin de promocionar su obra.

Yendi Tomas Estrada Cancino. Graduado en la Academia de Artes Plástica "El ALBA" de Holguín en el año 2000 en la especialidad de pintura, diseño gráfico e ilustración. Nació en el municipio de Manzanillo en el año 1977.

Estudios realizados

Graduado de la Escuela de Artes Visuales de Holguín. Actualmente reside entre Santiago de Cuba y Manzanillo. Demuestra una reverencia obvia por Rembrandt, cuyo espíritu infunde muchas de sus pinturas. Su obra se encuentra en numerosas colecciones privadas en Cuba y en el extranjero. Ha realizado numerosas exposiciones en toda Cuba que incluye una exposición individual en la prestigiosa " Galería Oriente ", en Santiago de Cuba, 2003.

Carmen Herrera and Rosalind Krauss Among Winners of 2016 CAA Awards

The College Art Association (CAA) has announced the recipients of the 2016 Awards for Distinction, which include artists Carrie Mae Weems and Carmen Herrera, and writer and art critic Rosalind E. Krauss.

Weems has been honored with the institution's Distinguished Feminist Award, Krauss with the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing on Art, and Herrera with the Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Herrera, who turned 100 years old in May 2015, is currently preparing her first retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which will open next Fall.

The awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of individual artists, art historians, authors, conservators, curators, and critics “whose efforts transcend their individual disciplines and contribute to the profession as a whole and to the world at large."

Female professionals won 11 out of the 13 categories of the awards, pointing to the much-delayed but increasing recognition that women artists, curators, academics, and critics are finally receiving within the art world.

Other honorees include Stephanie Barron and Sabine Eckmann, who received the Alfred H. Barr Jr. Award for curating the exhibition “New Objectivity: Modern German Art in the Weimar Republic 1919–1933," on view at Los Angele's LACMA until January 18; Arlene Shechet, who won the Artist Award for Distinguished Body of Work; Sabina Ott is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching of Art Award; and Patricia Berger, who will take home the Distinguished Teaching of Art History Award.

The awards will be presented at a special ceremony that will be held on February 3 during the convocation at the CAA's 104th Annual Conference in Washington DC, the largest gathering of artists, scholars, students, and arts professionals in the US. Both the convocation and the awards ceremony will be free and open to the public.

Lesbia Claudina Vent Dumois (born November 6, 1932 in Cruces, Las Villas, Cuba) is a contemporary Cuban visual artist, whose works include illustration, painting, and engraving.
Vent Dumois studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Santa Clara, Cuba under Leopoldo Romañach. In 1961 she obtained a UNESCO fellowship to study lithography in Prague. In 1968 she was a member of the Taller Experimental de Gráfica (TEG), in Havana.
From 1980 to 1993 she was Director of Fine Arts at the Casa de las Américas in Havana, and since 1993 is Vice President of the Casa de las Américas.

Flora Fong is a Female Cuban visual artist who was born in 1941.

Flora Fong`s workart occupies a singular place at the contemporary Cuban painting. Within her artistic creation, are appreciable components of country`s life, nature and culture like: landscapes, domestic life and her Chinesse ethnic root.

She finished her intermediate studies at the Plastic Arts School in Camagüey on the specialty of painting and since 1966 until 1970 she studied at Cubanacán National School of Art in Havana City.
She teached at San Alejandro Plastic Arts Academy up to 1989 and nowadays, she is member of Cuban Writers and Artists National Union (UNEAC) and the International Association of Plastic Artists (AIAP).
In addition of painting and drawing, Flora Fong has intruded on ceramics, vitral and design on fabrics. She has made illustrations for different national and international publications.
Among her most interesting works we can highlight in 1995 a collective mural at National Hotel in Havana City, in 1997 the design of a vitral (150 x 600 cm) for the Piano-Bar at El Pedregal Restaurant in Havana City and in 1999 a sculture placed at Varadero Spa.

Her creation is located at diverse countries such as: Cuba: National Fine Arts Museum of Havana and Museum of Camagüey; Nicaragua: Museum of America in Managua; China: National Parlament ibn Beijing; France: France Liberte Foundation in Paris; Swiss: World Organization for the Intellectual Property (OMPI): South Corea: Museum of Contemporary Art Sonjwe in Kyongju; Canada: Real Museum of Ontairo in Toronto; Spain: Real House in Madrid.
Flora Fong`s Artwork is also appreciable at various particular collections in Cuba, Spain, Holland, China, United Sates, Portugal, Mexico, Chile, Germany, Italy, Greece, Trinidad Tobago and Japan among other countries.
